A Forecasting Platform User Made $436,000 from Bets Predicting Maduro's Downfall.
A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.
Changing Odds in Predictions
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January increased in the hours before former President Trump stated on the weekend that Maduro had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before Announcement
Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
But the odds had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.
A handful of other traders also made significant sums from predicting the capture.
Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule introduced on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
